| Take Your Head Out of the Sand Over Functional Skills! MindLeaders ThirdForce has an innovative blended solution to the challenge presented by Functional Skills. We carried out a Functional Skills pilot with two large national employers. It was a truly robust pilot choosing learners with a range of ages, previous learning experiences and a wide geographical spread to really road test our delivery model. Our results were: First Time Pass Rates - 91% and average Completion Times – 8-12 weeks.

Inquiry makes recommendations to improve Adult Literacy The Inquiry says that addressing adult literacy needs must be regarded as a moral imperative, and the cycle of inter-generational difficulties with literacy must be broken. It also says that more teachers must be trained and that there needs to be more innovative and cross-sector partnership work to help support literacy skills development. |
Lifelong Learning Accounts launch The Government this week officially launched Lifelong Learning Accounts - a free personalised online service for adults that allows them to take greater control of their learning and working life. Lifelong Learning Accounts support and are supported by the Next Step Careers Service, and from April 2012, the new National Careers Service. |
New Challenges, New Chances for adult learning This Government consultation sets out proposals to implement radical reform of adult learning and skills provision in England. The consultation, which is open until the 21st of October 2011, includes measures to review and improve basic literacy and numeracy provision for adults. |
New Learning Support materials A new suite of resources and materials, developed to improve the quality of learning support for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, is now available on the Excellence Gateway. |

Skills and Family Learning A new family learning skills section is now available on the Excellence Gateway. The section has resources, guidance and activities showing how literacy, language and numeracy skills underpin familiar family learning contexts, tasks and activities. |
The future of FE consultation survey - disabled students Disability Alliance is currently working on a response to the BIS consultation 'New Challenges, New Chances' on the future of FE and Skills provision, and would welcome your input. |
Third Sector Toolkit This kit, which is available on the Excellence Gateway, is designed to support voluntary and community organisations so that they can respond to the literacy, language, communication and numeracy skills needs of service users, staff and volunteers. |
