About Us

Newton Rigg College is part of the Askham Bryan group of land-based colleges. Based at Penrith, Cumbria, and attracting students nationally to our range of land-based courses including agriculture, forestry, game-keeping, horticulture and equine studies, we also offer Skills for Life and Initial Teacher Training in the lifelong learning sector to the local Eden community and beyond.


Courses

Skills for Life

Our experienced adult literacy and numeracy specialist teachers offer Skills for Life tuition to adults from Entry Level to Level 2 throughout Cumbria, on-campus and in community and workplace settings. Teachers in the lifelong learning sector who need to develop minimum core skills are welcome for free, confidential assessment, individualised learning and online tests.

Teacher training programmes

We offer Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS), Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS), Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) and the Level 5 Subsidiary Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector for tutors, teachers and trainers in the sector.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS): short courses are offered several times throughout the year, at Newton Rigg or as arranged with training providers in the lifelong learning sector. This course is aimed at all new teachers in the sector and is the first unit of the CTLLS and DTLLS.

Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is a two year part-time teaching qualification for those in a full teaching role, with the option to complete after one year the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) for those in an associate teaching role.

For CTLLS and DTLLS you must have a minimum Level 3 qualification in your teaching subject area. You should have minimum core skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT and you must be teaching a minimum of 150 hours over two years (DTLLS) or 30 hours (CTLLS) in the lifelong learning sector during the course.

Level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong learning Sector is for Literacy subject specialist teachers, and is aimed at candidates who hold or are working towards a full Level 5 qualification and/or equivalent allowing them to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector but now need to qualify as a specialist teacher (full role) in English (Literacy). You must have 75 hours teaching practice - teaching literacy or Functional Skills English to groups and individuals over at least two levels of the national curriculum. You should have a minimum English Language qualification at Level 2 and be able to demonstrate competence in English at level 3. The course includes an initial assessment of your personal skills and teaching and learning activities to support their development. The course is part-time over one year, delivered via a mixture of on-campus and e-learning activities.
