Developing Advanced Practitioners


Three cohorts of Advanced Practitioners (APs) have now undertaken the first two days of a new 3-day CPD programme from the Education and Training Foundation. New and experienced APs from across England and the sector attended the training events, with representation from Offender Learning, Adult and Community Learning, Independent Training Providers, the Third sector and Colleges.

June has been a busy month for the team designing and facilitating the 'Developing Advanced Practitioners' CPD programme. It’s been equally busy for the 78 practitioners who secured a place and joined one of the three cohorts on the first two days of the programme, which took place in Birmingham and Leeds.

The 78 practitioners all operate in Advanced Practitioner type roles, as identified in the Tyler et al research commissioned by the Education and Training Foundation last November: Understanding the Role of Advanced Practitioners in English Further Education. They participated in the Day 1 & 2 residential, engaging in carefully designed learning tasks and critically exploring questions such as:

  • How should we best develop teachers in their role, and with the aim of improving learner outcomes? 
  • What is ‘outstanding’ teaching, learning and assessment?
  • How can APs drive quality improvements within their organisations, within their departments and within teams?

Each AP received their own AP toolkit, worked collaboratively to problem solve scenarios APs typically face and scoped their small-scale quality improvement project, while learning from their peers and developing powerful relationships. The feedback has been excellent, with 100% rating their experience of engaging in the programme to date as either outstanding or very good.

Going forward, dedicated AP-Mentors will help their AP mentees to plan, implement, evaluate and disseminate project findings with opportunities for all APs to review project progress on Day 3. Everyone is keen to continue the rich and thought-provoking conversations between now and the next face to face meeting, and will be using the Canvas Learning Management System to facilitate this.
