ESOL Literacies Collaborative Event
This free collaborative event from Education Scotland is for ESOL practitioners who are new to working with ESOL literacies learners. The event will be held in Livingston on the 26th of March 9:30 to 15:30 and the closing date for registrations is Friday 22nd February.
'An ESOL literacies learner is defined as a person who has little or no literacy in his/her own mother-tongue and who has little or no literacy in English and whose spoken English may range from basic to fluent. Over recent years we have seen a change in learner profiles including the increase in the number of refugees settling across Scotland. We have seen a growing demand for support and guidance for practitioners who are working with ESOL literacies learners to equip them with skills and knowledge of literacy teaching practices and professional development.
The purpose of this event will be to bring practitioners together to collaborate and develop their professional learning in relation to working with ESOL literacies learners and delivering ESOL literacy provision. It is hoped that the event will build capacity of practitioners to work effectively with ESOL literacies learners by having improved knowledge of approaches to teaching and initial assessment as well as an understanding of the SQA ESOL literacies units that can be offered to ESOL literacies learners and the SQA accredited learning in teaching ESOL literacies for ESOL practitioners.
The event will focus on the following aspects:
- Initial assessment of an ESOL literacies learner
- Teaching ESOL literacies – the language experience approach
- SQA Preparation for Literacy and other level 2 units
- Professional Development Award: Teaching ESOL Literacies to Adults
If you would like to attend the event, please complete the registration process.
The closing date for registrations is Friday 22nd February. An email will be sent in the following week to those who have been allocated a place.
As places are limited, priority will be given to those who are new to working with ESOL literacies learners or who will be working with ESOL literacies learners in the near future.
