Welcome to the Skills for Life Network E-News Update
A couple of points of note in this late summer edition:
LSIS have announced the launch of nine regional 'Support for Literacy, Language and Numeracy' (SfLLN) programmes. The new programmes will target providers who are new to Skills for Life, offender learning institutions, providers with employer facing activity, and those providers with significant numbers of learners below Level 2 who have been identified with provision that is unsatisfactory. It will also target employers seeking to improve the skills of their workforce. See below for more details.
The Functional Skills Support Programme closes on 31st August 2010, and from September onwards there will be no further post-16 central support for functional skills. See the article for more information.

The Skills Funding Agency has launched a pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) for the provision of Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET) services in England
New English language testing for partners
The UK Border Agency has announced that from 29 November 2010, any migrant who wants to enter or remain in the UK as the partner of a British citizen or a person settled here will need to show that they can speak and understand English, by taking an English language test with an approved test provider.
New learning and development qualifications
Current NVQs in learning and development will not be available beyond March 2011. Lifelong Learning UK is working with partners across all sectors to propose new qualifications for the learning and development workforce.
Post-16 Functional Skills Support Programme closure
The Functional Skills Support Programme closes on 31st August 2010. From September onwards there will be no further post-16 central support for functional skills. Functional Skills support for LAs and schools from National Strategies will continue until March 2011.

Survey of Adult Literacies in Scotland
The Scottish Government has published a report assessing the literacy skills levels of the 16-65 year old population in Scotland. Commissioned from a team of researchers from the University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh with other partners, the report presents and analyses data from the 2009 Scottish Survey of Adult Literacies.
Widening access to apprenticeships
A report by the Young Foundation explores ways to widen the opportunities for apprenticeships to young people who either face barriers to, or have not seriously considered, apprenticeships
