In this edition of the update, we feature a number of recently published research reports on literacy and numeracy skills, and on skill shortages. See below for full details.

The Prime Minister has announced a reform of the prison system, including changes to prison education. You can read more on this and on the Coates Review of Prison Education in the respective article.

An online survey has been launched to gather employers' views on the functional skills reform programme. The survey will be open until late March 2016 - do make sure you have your say and/or forward the information to employer organisations you may be working with.

Building Better Skills for All: A Review of England
This newly published OECD report shows that young people aged 16-34 in England have significantly lower literacy and numeracy skills at every level compared to many other countries, and an estimated 9 million adults aged 16-65 have low literacy or numeracy skills or both.

Employers face skills shortages
New research from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills has found that there is an unprecedented shortage of skills which, coupled with modest economic growth, has left thousands of vacancies unfilled.
