In this edition, we have information on the All Party Parliamentary Group report on social integration. The group is calling for people to be required to learn English before coming to live in the UK, or be enrolled in compulsory ESOL classes when they arrive. We also have an update on the Functional Skills Reform programme, and on the revised guidance on qualifications in education, training and assessment.

Functional Skills Reform Programme: development of new exemplar curricula
Two distinct but linked exemplar curricula to support the teaching of revised Functional Skills maths and English at all levels (Entry 1- Level 2) are now in development.

Ofsted Annual Report 2015/16
The Ofsted Annual Report shows that many general FE colleges are struggling to recruit and retain enough skilled and experienced teachers of GCSE maths and English, and that for many students, an alternative level 2 qualification may be a more appropriate means of improving their maths and English and ensuring that they are ready for work.
