Communities of Practice

Skills for Life Network

This strand of activity has enabled 50 experienced education and training practitioners to develop their skills as APs through networking as Communities of Practice and with the support of our AP Toolkit and Guides.

Communities of Practice were first recognised by Lave and Wenger (see pages 7-8 of Facilitating Professional Development and High-Performance Teams Through Situated Learning) as groups of people drawn together because of a shared interest in creating positive change. This group was further supported through a structured programme of activities, arranged in 8 modules, delivered via Canvas, a leading Learner Management System. This online platform also served to enable groups of APs to meet, virtually, to support each other’s professional development.

CoP Welcome
Matrix of opportunities

This structure enabled APs to participate in multiple Communities of Practice: with colleagues in their institution; with other APs on the programme, as Action Learning Sets, and with other networks and interest groups via a ‘Matrix of Opportunities’ curated within a Padlet.
