Focus on #StudyGood Mentoring

Skills for Life Network

You’ve probably encountered Punam Khosla while she was busy talking to providers up and down the country during the recruitment phase of #StudyGood. Punam is also a familiar face to Advanced Practitioners, due to her work on the #APConnect programme, also funded by ETF. Now #StudyGood is up and running, Punam has turned her considerable skills and energy to mentoring six providers, as well as organising the #StudyGood national focus groups. She recently brought together a number of providers for a Community of Practice event at Leek and Buxton College.

Punam reports:

“It was a fabulous day with colleagues from a range of #StudyGood providers, including Myerscough, Derby Adult and Community Learning, Calderdale College and Inspire Culture. Everyone present came together to share the love for Maths and English, inspired by the programme that the team at Buxton and Leek have developed. It was an inspiring day and it was wonderful to see many of our #StudyGood providers connecting with each other, sharing effective practice and really excited by their collaboration.”

A glance at the running order for the day showed just how much everyone packed in:

  • Getting to know one another – this was a brand new collaboration and so exciting that it was across provider type.
  • Quick wins and tips with resources to take away and follow up.
  • Observation of an English and Maths lesson, with opportunities to speak to students as well as conduct a murder mystery puzzle!
  • Presentation of action research findings around Maths and English.
  • Working lunch with English and Maths tutors.
  • An embedding English and Maths workshop.

Buxton and Leek are national leaders in Maths, with an achievement rate which is 12.9% above the national average, and it was great to learn from them and with them on the day. Participants said:

“We were sharing the love, so many quick wins to take away and this has given me enthusiasm to change and I’m feeling more confident that it is ok to change things.”

“Honest, helpful, insightful and generous sharing of ideas and resources.”

“Fabulous day with lots of information and input from lots of practitioners that have been on a journey to enhance their delivery. It was great to see practical actions.”
