A new policy document, Equipping our Teachers for the Future: reforming Initial Teacher Training for the Learning and Skills Sector has been launched
“Kim Howells, Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education has launched reforms to initial teacher training for the learning and skills sector.
The award of ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’ is at the centre of reforms for the training of teachers in the learning and skills sector. The changes were announced on 2 November by Minister of State Kim Howells and are described in a new policy document, Equipping our Teachers for the Future: reforming Initial Teacher Training for the Learning and Skills Sector.
The reforms will be implemented over the next two years and introduced in full from September 2007. The key features are:
• initial training leading to ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’;
• the development of Centres of Excellence in Teacher Training; and
• new standards, quality assurance and planning arrangements for initial teacher training.
