Samples of thank you letters using the same words but with different punctuation (and hence very different meanings!)

Punctuation and thank you letters

The BBC online Magazine recently ran a competition to write a thank you letter with two meanings. Entrants had to use the same words – or words that sound the same – but change the punctuation. The five winningletters can be seen by clicking here.

These letters will make a very useful resource for teaching:

Ws/E3.3 – Use punctuation correctly (e.g. capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks) and

Rs/E3.3 – Use punctuation and capitalisation to aid understanding.

You could even run your own competition for your learners!
