An update on the qualifications needed to work in schools
To work in schools within the state sector in England and Wales, you need to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are a number of routes to QTS: undergraduate, postgraduate, employment and assessment-only. You will find information on QTS on the Training and Development Agency for Schools website.
Discussions are currently taking place on what those who gain the forthcoming Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for the post-16 sector will need to do to be able to teach in schools. However, if you have substantial experience teaching in FE then you can apply for QTS via an assessment process. Working with 14-16 year olds
