This one day conference will:

  • Examine the progress toward the 2010 target, including how to meet the key challenge of engaging the hard to reach and socially excluded in learning, which forms the second phase of the Skills for Life Strategy
  • Hear from Government on the latest directions for basic skills, in light of the latest policy including the 2006 Further Education White Paper, the 2005 Skills White Paper, the DWP Green Paper "A New Deal for Welfare: Empowering People to Work" and the forthcoming Leitch Review
  • Explore how to widen participation in numeracy, literacy and ICT training through strategies which target priority groups including those living in disadvantaged communities, the unemployed and offenders
  • Look at how to motivate those who may consider themselves ‘non-learners’ and examine ways to encourage organisations of all sizes to commit to workforce training
  • Consider the role of both college and work-based learning, as well as non-institutionalised informal learning, and look at what can be done to support and encourage learners
  • Examine what can be done to improve retention rates for basic skills learners
  • Highlight the importance of workforce development for the Skills for Life workforce
