Information on the latest edition of Reflect magazine and on three new research reports – all available free of charge

New insights into effective teaching of adults
The findings of a major investigation into effective teaching practices are discussed in the latest edition of reflect, the termly magazine of the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy. The magazine devotes six pages to the main conclusions of a three-year study of teaching approaches in reading, writing, numeracy, ESOL and ICT. It also carries special reports on:
– the joys and challenges of practitioner research
– why ESOL is about much more than language learning
– planning to teach a Maths4Life session.

The NRDC has also released three new research reports that shed fresh light on key aspects of Skills for Life work. All of the reports are FREE.

Four Years On (NRDC 2005-06: Findings and messages for policy and practice), compiled and edited by John Vorhaus
The annual review of NRDC research and development provides insights and evidence on a wide range of issues such as engaging the hard to reach, the composition of the Skills for Life workforce, and how learning affects earnings.

‘You wouldn’t expect a maths teacher to teach plastering …’ Embedding literacy, language and numeracy in post-16 vocational programmes – the impact on learning and achievement, by Helen Casey et al
This is the report of a recently-completed research project that has highlighted the striking benefits of embedding literacy, language and numeracy in vocational courses.

New Light on Literacy and Numeracy (summary report) by John Bynner and Samantha Parsons
Bynner and Parsons’ report is the latest in a series drawing on data from the 1958 and 1970 British birth cohort studies, which have followed up individuals throughout their lives. It provides answers to some fundamental questions such as "What happens to adults whose skills improve?" "How strong is the link between parents’ and childrens’ literacy and numeracy levels?"
