An update on additional funding for 16 -19 year old learners
Details of how an additional £155 million will be allocated next year have now been published, with £35m being ringfenced for GCSE maths and English resits.
Maths & English in the Spending Review
Providers of 16-19 education will receive £400 million additional funding in 2020/2021, including £35m for targeted interventions to support GCSE maths and English resit learners. The advanced maths premium will be funded with an extra £10m, and there will be an additional £10m for ESOL provision to fund the second wave of the integration-areas programme.Â
Maths and English condition of funding
From academic year 2019 to 2020, full time students with a grade 2 or below in maths or English can choose to study towards functionalskills level 2 or a GCSE grade 9 to 4. This also applies to part time students who have a grade 3 or grade D GCSE.

The Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills has outlined the government’s expectation that guided learning hours for reformed Functional Skills qualifications should be set at 55.
