GCSE maths and English results 2022

This year’s results showed a slight improvement compared to the previous set of exams in 2019, which were taken before the switch to teacher assessments during the pandemic.

Exactly a third of students received a mark lower than a Grade 4 in maths and English in 2019, while 32.4 per cent failed to obtain a standard pass in the two subjects this year.

However, this year’s results have still given rise to concerns that a large proportion of young people across the country are failing to acquire the skills needed to access most jobs, apprenticeships and university degrees. Since 2016 students who fail to achieve a Grade 4 in either subject have been required by the Government to resit the exams until they are 18.
