Thinking Through Mathematics: strategies for teaching and learning

Would you like to work with some new resources developed by the Maths4Life project? We are looking for a group of tutors who will use the approaches and activities with their learners, reflect on the learning in their classrooms and share their developing practice with colleagues in the region.

Malcolm Swan has been working with the Standards Unit Mathematics Project team for the last three years to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics across the learning and skills sector. The same team is now working with Maths4Life on a project called Thinking Through Mathematics: strategies for teaching and learning, to develop further sessions from Entry 1 up to Level 1, based on the same principles and approaches. More information can be found on the web site www.maths4life.org

Our first regional meeting will be held at:
Science Learning Centre North East
Front Street, Pity Me, County Durham, DH1 5BZ
On Friday 1st December 2006
From 10.00 till 15.00

At the meeting Oonagh Gormley, the Maths4Life project manager, will provide the background to the project and the approaches used. You will be able to work together with colleagues using some of the activities and to take them with you to use in your organisation. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to plan how we can then share our experiences in using the approaches in the future and support each other in our practice.

We hope that staff from a variety of organisations including, colleges, adult and community learning, family learning, secure institutions and work based learning will be able to join us. If possible two colleagues from any organisation might like to attend with a view to working collaboratively with the approaches within their work setting.

To apply for a place, please email viv.brown@ncetm.org.uk giving your
name, contact details, job role, organization and any particular dietary or other requirements. Places will be confirmed by email.
