An overview and update on professional development opportunities available through the regional Skills for Life Improvement Programme
The Skills for Life Improvement Programme builds on the work of the Skills for Life Strategy through:
Workforce development
- helping Skills for Life staff at all levels, in all learning settings, gain professional qualifications and continue to develop thinking, skills and practice.
A whole organisation approach to quality improvement
- helping you be more effective in meeting the literacy, language and numeracy needs of all learners wherever they are within the organisation.
Innovation in teaching and learning
- helping staff develop and share effective practice
- helping you to refresh and strengthen practice to ensure learners engage, progress and achieve.
The Skills for Life Improvement Programme complements other QIA programmes.
Workforce development

- Embedding Skills for Working Guidance in Vocational Provision

- Post Graduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring
- Professional Recognition Learning and Skills
- Teaching Basic Literacy to ESOL Learners 2 Day
- Using the Pre-Entry Curriculum Framework to support learners
As part of the Skills for Life Improvement Programme in the North East there will be accelerated routes to teaching and subject specialist qualifications – details to follow.
A whole organisation approach to quality improvement
Following consultation in the region, the following sectors and themes were chosen as priority areas for the North East. Groups of providers will receive support from Development Advisers in the following sectors, looking at a Whole Organisation Approach:
- ACL
- E2E
- Prisons
- Specialist Colleges
- Train to Gain
- WBL
Providers will also be brought together to look at sharing and transferring good practice around the following themes:
- ESOL – teaching basic literacy to ESOL learners and working with employers
- Engaging young people not in employment, education or training in Skills for Life learning
- Numeracy – interactive approaches to numeracy, including the use of e-learning
- Offender ILPs
- Reading at Entry 2 and below, with links with dyslexia
- Train to Gain – embedding Skills for Life in Train to Gain programmes
- Work based – initial assessment
Innovation in teaching and learning
Groups of providers delivering care and construction will be brought together to look at embedding Skills for Life, with the support of a Development Adviser.
