When we meet someone and ask “Where are you from?” or “What do you enjoy doing?”, what we are really asking is “What’s your story?”
When we start to share our story with others, we can begin to celebrate differences and recognise how much we all have in common.
The 4 new stories introduce Misra, Islam, Hassan and Muna. Misra comes from Ethiopia and loves cooking. We follow her around her local supermarket and then see her cooking a traditional dish in her kitchen. Islam came to the UK from Sudan and prepares to have her second baby. Hassan came to the UK from Yemen and talks about how much he misses the landscape of his country. We see how he has developed a love of the English countryside as a way to connect him to his homeland. Muna, shares her love of reading and her ambition to have her own book on the bookshelves she frequently visits.
The author of the collection, Jennie Cole, says, “What I like about this series is that the stories are all so different, yet each story reminds us of how much we all have in common, they are full of hope and inspiration and all the characters show bravery and resilience in some way.”
Feedback from tutors:
“Great books with plenty of lovely and bright images for easier comprehension. My students can easily relate to these real life stories. Perfect addition to my classroom library!”
“Amazing books filled with authentic stories that are perfect to use in an ESOL class. They contain beautiful and colourful pictures which make it an easy-read if students read them independently. Each story is unique and shows an interesting individual. Our students can relate to them, but also find them inspiring. The stories show that we all have a story to tell.”
“Great visuals! The photos are fab! Interesting real life stories which tell you something about each person. Good for ESOL Entry 2.”
“These books are perfect readers for ESOL students. The simple but accurate language is ideal for a range of different levels. The stories are all real people’s life experiences and they have clearly been written with a lot of heart.”
