In April 2007, 11 Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training (CETTs) were created in order to raise the standard of initial teacher education and improve the quality and consistency of continuing professional development in the learning and skills sector.

The centres are now in their second year of activity and have quickly established themselves as important hubs of information and support for teacher trainers across England.

Disseminating information and resources and creating networks of knowledge are key parts of the CETT strategy and all centres continue to bring together providers to pool their expertise. This approach connects people from colleges, HE institutions, Work Based Learning settings, offender learning centres and Adult & Community Learning organisations.

From April 2007 up until October 2008, CETTs were funded by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA), but are now funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS). LSIS is the new sector-owned body, formed from Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) and QIA, to develop excellent and sustainable FE provision across the sector. LSIS work in partnership with all parts of the sector to provide vision, leadership, clarity and high quality support; practising and enabling continuous self-improvement and capacity building.
