The full range of literacy, numeracy and ESOL teaching qualifications and professional development programmes is available at the Teaching Development Centre, Newcastle College. For information on all programmes, and for information on getting into teaching, getting qualified, or advice and guidance events, contact Stefanie Pendleton. Bursaries for teaching programmes:
Did you know there is funding available through the FE (Post 16) Initial Teacher Training Bursary scheme for trainee teachers

  • If you plan to take a DTLLS qualification……
  • If you are new to teaching…..
  • If you intend to teach one of the specified shortage subjects (Maths, Science, Engineering, Technology and Skills for Life Literacy and Numeracy)
  • If you are in a non-paid teaching role you could be eligible for up to a maximum £5,000 bursary

Get your literacy, numeracy or ESOL teaching qualification:

  • Diploma in Teaching Numeracy in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS Numeracy)
    DTLLS Numeracy is an integrated qualification which leads to QTLS as a subject specialist in numeracy teaching.
  • Diploma in Teaching Literacy in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS Literacy)
    DTLLS Literacy is an integrated qualification which leads to QTLS as a subject specialist in literacy teaching.
  • Additional Diploma in Teaching Numeracy or Literacy in the Lifelong Learning Sector
    If you have a Certificate in Education or PGCE, complete your subject specialism in one year.
  • Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTE(E)LLS)
    This qualification leads to QTLS for those seeking or working in a ‘full’ lecturing role for ESOL (who have full responsibility for teaching and learning).
  • Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning sector (ADTE(E)LLS)
    A one-year programme for SfL trainers who have a generic teaching qualification or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.

Want to teach EFL abroad or in the UK?

  • Certificate in teaching English to second language speakers (CELTA)
    We will be running a four-week intensive CELTA programme in July 2011. CELTA programmes are validated by Cambridge ESOL, a branch of Cambridge University, and are internationally-recognised qualifications.
  • Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA)
    The DELTA is an advanced ESOL qualification for teachers who are already experienced and wish to develop professionally or gain promotion. The course leads to an internationally recognised postgraduate level teaching award accredited by Cambridge ESOL.

Want to get your first teaching qualification?
PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong learning sector) is part of the national qualification structure for teachers in the sector, and can be your first step into teaching or to getting qualified.

We offer two new intensive programmes for gaining your PTLLS award:

  • New to teaching?
    We offer an intensive four-day programme:
    Tuesday 30th to Fri 2nd Sept.
  • Already in a teaching/training role?
    We offer a distance learning/fast track option which is made up of two full day sessions and support for completing your portfolio:
    Day 1: Tuesday 30th August
    Day 2: Friday 2nd Sept

  • BA & MA in Lifelong Learning and Professional Development courses

Blended versions of the BA and MA programmes in Lifelong Learning and Professional Development will run from October 2010.
These programmes are designed to allow you to research your own professional practice and environment as well as wider policy areas, and optional modules include:
