‘Passport’ in English should replace GCSE, says commission
Replacing English Language GCSE with a ‘Passport in English’ qualification to be taken by students at any age when they are ready between 15-19 is a proposal of an independent commission set up by the Association of School and College Leaders.
Maths & English in the Spending Review
Providers of 16-19 education will receive £400 million additional funding in 2020/2021, including £35m for targeted interventions to support GCSE maths and English resit learners. The advanced maths premium will be funded with an extra £10m, and there will be an additional £10m for ESOL provision to fund the second wave of the integration-areas programme.Â
Functional Skills and the National Retraining Scheme
The national retraining scheme is the government’s new programme to help adults retrain into better jobs and be ready for future changes to the economy, including those brought about by automation. Functional skills training, initially focusing on English and maths, will be a key part of the programme.
English and maths GCSE resits pass rates
Official figures show that the proportion of GCSE resit students who achieved a grade 4 pass has fallen in both English and maths. However, overall results in both subjects among students of all ages improved slightly.
